The Core Curriculum in the Early Years: Prescribed Courses

At the outset, the College conferred the degrees of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.  Just as today, the degrees required130 semester hours.   According to the 1959-60 College Catalogue, at the end of the Freshman Year students chose a field of concentration.  The major field of study for a B.A. degree was English, History or Languages.  The major field of study for the B.S. degree was Biology, Chemistry or Education.  What we now know as the core curriculum, the 1959-60 Catalogue referred to as Prescribed Courses.  All students were required to take the Prescribed courses
