The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSCs) is an international congregation of women religious present on six continents and in seventeen countries. The MSCs are women who are drawn by the Heart of Jesus to be bearers of Christ’s love in the world. In this Snapshot you will meet one of these amazing women, Sr. Bernadette Anello, MSC. Sr. Bernadette is well known at Cabrini College having served as Campus Minister at Cabrini College from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s.
Current ministry: Pastoral work in Baguio City, Philippines
What attracted me to a life as a Missionary Sister: The wonderful, loving example of MSCs who were my teachers in our parish elementary school and at Mother Cabrini High School.
Experience that convinced me that religious life was the right path for me: Dating and pursuing a career in teaching were satisfying but not enough. I kept feeling a pull towards more.
Favorite prayer or scriptural quote: “One thing only does God ask of you: to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8
Favorite way to pray: In my room, in chapel or outdoors with Sacred Scripture or just listening in silence
Blessings and challenges of community life: Blessings: living with others who share their dreams, experiences, ways that they are God-touched, and being gifted by the various creative expressions that they so generously give to all of us. Challenges: dealing with folks from different cultural backgrounds, ages, and customs…respecting the differences and celebrating the unique contributions these bring to community life.
What I love most about being an MSC: I couldn’t imagine being in any other community; our global connections, inclusion of lay collaborators in all that we do, and our openness to explore new frontiers continues to excite me. We have a passion for mission and invite others to “walk” with us in this faith journey.
Best loved ministry: Parish ministry and Vocation ministry
What I do for enjoyment – hobbies and interests: Walking, swimming, dancing, and reading…I also enjoy a good movie and always enjoy visiting with family and friends.
People might be surprised to know that I…played snare drums in a marching band for four years.
My advice for those who are in discernment: Be open to the Spirit’s lead and trust that God loves you so much and only wants the best for you
Favorite resources that I would recommend for those in discernment: Find a support group such as Catholics on Call, Circles of Discernment (MSC program in Baguio City, Philippines), make a retreat, find a spiritual director.
