Holy Thursday in the Philippines

Holy Week is marked by fasting, prayer and repentance and liturgical services that commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Christ.  One of traditions for the people of the Philippines is the Visita Iglesia.  Spanish for ‘Church Visit‘, the Visita Iglesia involves visiting seven churches on Holy Thursday.  The practice is sometimes extended to fourteen churches aiming to represent the fourteen stations of the cross, a tradition which reverently recounts Christ’s crucifixion.

The Missionary Sisters arrived in Baguio, Philippines in 1993.  Working with the non-governmental organization, Save Our School Children Foundationthe Sisters provide  tutoring,  cultural, recreational and spiritual events, summer camp, food distribution, prison ministry for juvenile offenders, and health clinic services.
